National Guard and Reserve members comprise about 50 percent of the miltiary’s total strength, making them a vital link to the national security.
“If we are going to sustain their participation, we need to sustain the support of the employers,” said Dennis McCarthy, assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs. “Finding out what we need to do to get that support is of vital national interest.”
The survey is the largest study of its kind since the terrorist attacks of 2001, when the military relied heavily on guard and reserve members by calling them away from civilian jobs.
The employer support of the guard and reserve, a Department of Defense agency, sent the survey to 80,000 employers.
