Colo.-based Whistler Blackcomb is testing an app that lets people use their iPhones and Android-based smartphones as ski passes.
This spring, season pass holders or people with the Canadian resort’s frequency cards can download the free app and have their phones be scanned to get on lifts, much as phones can be scanned at the airport. The app lets skiers and snowboarders track their vertical feet and speed; get real-time updates on weather, what runs are groomed and lift status; take photos to post on Facebook or Twitter; and more.
If all goes well, the resort hopes to offer the lift ticket function to all guests with smartphones next season, potentially reducing ticket lines.
The app, called Whistler Blackcomb Live Powered by Telus, was developed by Avon, Colo.-based Resort Technology Partners.
