Buckley Air Force Base has opened new quarters for a fighter squadron that’s part of the homeland defense system established after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The $4 million structure is for the F-16 pilots and crews of the Colorado Air National Guard’s 120th Fighter Squadron. The squadron is one of 18 air sovereignty alert units established after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Colorado unit is responsible for missions over the nation’s midsection.

Previously, the unit’s quarters were in trailers.

A formal ribbon-cutting for the new building was held last Saturday.

Buckley is in the east Denver suburb of Aurora.
