Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has been named among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for emergency medicine by HealthGrades.

The award, which was given to both Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center, recognizes the top 268 hospitals with superior outcomes. It’s the second year the two received the award.

The findings are based on an analysis of more than 7 million Medicare patient records from 2007 to 2009. It focused on 12 of the most common and life-threatening medical emergencies among the patient population – heart attack, stroke, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In February, HealthGrades named Penrose-St. Francis one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2011, the fourth consecutive year PSF has garnered the award and the only recipient in Colorado.

Hospitals do not pay for the recognition from HealthGrades, but they do pay the company to use its name in any marketing endeavors.
