Colorado Springs unemployment rate in March fell to 9.7 percent, the drop in more than a decade.

Even though the news is encouraging, it still means more than 30,000 residents were out of work during the month.

The March rate is down from a revised 10.2 percent in February

Area payrolls in March grew 0.2 percent from the same month a year earlier for the second consecutive month, adding 500 jobs from the previous month and 400 from a year earlier, the department said.

The gain from the previous month is the biggest since the end of 2007, just before the recession began, however, it doesn’t replaces the nearly 17,000 jobs lost during the past three years.
