And, the crowds are pouring in.
Adrian Adame, manager of the 7-Eleven store at 7 S. Nevada Ave., said his store is busy today with people seeking the free slushy, frozen drinks.
“The cherry seems to be going pretty fast,” Adame said. “People like that one.”
The store on Nevada is just one of 50 in Colorado Springs giving away free frozen slushie drinks today, which the chain does every year on its birthday, July 11, or 7/11.
“We’ve been doing this since 2002 and every year it gets more popular,” said Margaret Chabris, spokeswoman for 7-Eleven’s corporate offices. “The first year, I think we gave away 1 million, then 2 million, then 3 million and last year it was 4.5 million.”
This year, Chabris said the chain expects to hand out 5 million free slurpees nationally. Each store has about 500 to offer and some have been known to run out within the first few hours of the day, others will have free slurpees until late into the evening.
Adame said the shop on Nevada should be able to supply free slurpees well into the night.
“We’re prepared,” he said.
Cabris said the most popular flavors, in order, are cola, cherry and anything blue.
“It’s a way to celebrate our birthday, but also an opportunity to give customers a treat and thank them for their business,” Chabris said.
It’s not a bad way to bring people into the store either.
Adame said his store has seen a mix of people who come in exclusively for the free frozen beverage and who buy other things in the store while they’re there.
