The project, awarded to Springs-based Art C. Klein Construction, is laying the groundwork for a $9.5 million automated screening system.
The $9.5 million contract has gone to bidders, but has not yet been awarded.
Airport spokeswoman Agnes Blachut said the upgrades will streamline the screening system and decrease the need to open baggage during security checks.
Art C. Klein project manager Tom Clemans said the project is expected to be complete in January and that winning it was a big deal for the company.
“It’s our second biggest contract right now,” he said.
Clemans said Art C. Klein also recently won a $891,000 contract to upgrade the airport’s administrative offices.
