Silver Key Senior Services is looking for an El Paso County company that can prepare as many as 40,000 meals a year for area senior citizens.
Silver Key put out a request for proposal this week seeking a food service vendor who can prepare hot meals for its Meals on Wheels program, which delivers hot meals to 200 area senior citizens each day.
Silver Key used to prepare the meals, but went to an outside vendor last year, said Lorri Orwig, Silver Key Senior Services director, resource development.
That vendor, however, is in Commerce City and the distance has created some logistical issues.
“Our board of directors has said they want to provide additional business to a local vendor,” Orwig said.
Meals on Wheels started delivering a hot meal and two cold sides to Colorado Springs seniors in 1971. Orwig said Silver Key wants to double the program to 400 meals a day.
“We know there is a need in this community for home-delivered meals,” she said.
Seniors are visited by community volunteers who deliver the meals and offer companionship – a key part of the program, Orwig said.
“These visits not only provide emotional health for a senior, but also serve as an informal wellness check and can be a great solution for caregivers who have difficulty meeting their loved one for mid-day meals,” she said.
The deadline for submitting a letter of intent is Aug. 19, 2011 and all proposals must be submitted by Aug. 26. Interested vendors may contact Tara Winterfeld, Meals on Wheels Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org or find the Request for Proposal online at www.Silverkey.org.
