Denver-based RMI Associates has been barred from helping consumers file complaints with the state for a fee.

The court order obtained by Attorney General John Suthers also requires the company to refund any fees it received from consumers.

The order follows a lawsuit filed in August against RMI, alleging that the company claimed it could help victims recover losses related to a federal consumer protection lawsuit against Westminster-based Dalbey Education Institute.

Consumers do not have to pay for the assistance; the state offers help for free, Suthers said.

“Any private business that claims a ‘special relationship’ with my office or any other state or federal consumer protection agency is misleading you,” he said. “You should never pay a fee to file a consumer complaint with the state of Colorado.”
