Colorado businesses laid off 1,235 people in the third quarter of 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Low demand for business was the biggest reason for the layoffs.
Across the country, there were more than 184,000 people let go from their jobs, fewer than this time last year.
Layoffs due to completion of seasonal work accounted for 23 percent of the layoffs. California, New York and Illinois had the most layoffs.
Fifty-percent of businesses said they anticipate they will call those workers back.
It all adds up to a 9.1 percent unemployment rate, down from last year’s 9.5 rate.
