Due to lack of donations and a worsening financial situation, FutureSelf is closing its doors by the end of this year.
In business since 2001, the nonprofit offers youth arts programs, workshops and internships to more than 2,000 children in the Pikes Peak region.
The board of directors made the decision, and will remain engaged during the dissolution process.
“This decision was made in order to be responsible and respectful to our donors, our stakeholders, and our youth,” said FutureSelf Executive Director Abby Laine Sienkiewicz. “We’ve come to this tough decision with those folks in mind. Over the past year, many measures were taken to reduce our organizational costs. Our own struggle with funding was exacerbated by the recession and increased cuts in arts funding nationally. It created a ‘perfect storm’ situation for FutureSelf.”
Sienkiewicz said that other organizations could pick up where FutureSelf leaves off – the Fine Arts Center, Bemis School of Arts, Concrete Couch, Imagination Celebration and the Colorado Springs Conservatory.
The nonprofit’s remaining physical and financial assets will be donated to other programs throughout the community.
