An Air Force Academy instructor was chosen as the top professor in Colorado by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, marking the second straight year that the academy’s staff has received the award.

Dr. Thomas Yechout, a professor in the Academy’s Aeronautics Department, was recognized for writing a flight mechanics textbook and for helping cadets become part of national-level aeronautics research projects.

Yechout receives high ratings form cadets, averaging 5.8 on a 6.0 scale. He also received the Heiser Award from the Academy’s Class of 2005, recognizing him as the outstanding senior faculty educator for that year.

“The word in the hallways here … is that you are incredibly fortunate to wind up in one of Tom’s flight mechanics clases,” wrote fellow aeronautics professor Dr. Aaron Byerly in nominating Yechout for the award. “He has a reputation for being the best in the department for relating complicated and difficult concepts” in a way that is easy to understand.

Dr. Fran Pilch, depty department head of the political science department, received the award in 2010.
