Whether or not consumers want them, auto manufacturers are unveiling a fleet of vehicles that run using alternative fuels, reports the New York Times.
The automakers are competing for the highest mileage rates and trying to stay ahead of government regulations.
As long as gas stays below $4, analysts do not expect to see strong sales.
