Unemployment down in Springs – but still higher than state, nation

Colorado Springs had an unemployment rate of 9 percent in December, according to the latest figures from the Division of Labor and Employment.

The number is up from 8.7 percent in November, but is lower than the 9.4 percent unemployment rate in December 2010.

Statewide, unemployment decreased one-tenth of a percent to 7.9 percent. The number of people actively participating in the labor force increased 12,100 to 2.7 million and total employment increased to 2.5 million.

The national unemployment rate dropped two-tenths of a percent to 8.5 percent for the same time period.

The largest job declines were in professional and business services, other services and financial activities, according to state figures.
