A group of business owners in Hayden and Steamboat Springs want to create the Routt County Redneck Olympics, a daylong summer competition featuring pseudo-athletic events such as frozen turkey bowling and blind tractor races.

A group of 15 business owners and community leaders met in January to start planning the summer event. They plan to meet again this week to pin down a date and an event roster for the games that organizers plan to fund with sponsorships.

Organizers are betting the event will draw crowds from across the state and become a tourism magnet.

Oddity events in Colorado, such as the Emma Crawford Coffin Races in Manitou Springs and the Frozen Dead Guy Days in Nederland, have proven to be successful, drawing crowds of thousands each year.
