Colorado Springs named top weekend getaway

Because of its views of the “purple mountains majesty,” Colorado Springs is listed in the top 10 “Best Weekend Getaway” list in a recent U.S. News & World Report Travel article.

The list highlights destinations with “just the right ratio of relaxation and entertainment to leave you rejuvenated and ready to return to the grind on Monday,” the article said.

Colorado Springs ranks No. 6 “Best Weekend Getaway” on the list and is highlighted for having “prime picture-taking real estate” and being home to “true American institutions” such as the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The top three places to visit while in the Springs are the Garden of the Gods Park, Manitou Springs and Pikes Peak, according to the article.

Readers can weigh in on the list of 12 destinations named by the magazine by clicking “yes” or “no” on each city choice at

Other cities included on the list are Sedona, Ariz., and Monterey, Calif.  Las Vegas is No. 1 on the list.

The article said that views of purple mountains majesty and amber waves of grain in Colorado Springs make for a very photogenic weekend.

“Prime picture-taking real estate can be found at the top of Pikes Peak, but when you’ve seen enough, spend the rest of your weekend experiencing other truly American institutions,” the article said.
