Which Wich opens at University Village

Which Wich Superior Sandwiches opened the doors at its first Colorado Springs location today.

The shop at University Village on North Nevada Avenue is franchisee Jeff Gordon’s first in Colorado Springs, although he owns seven of the sandwich places in South Denver. And he plans to open another on North Academy Boulevard near Kelly Johnson Boulevard this summer.

“I’d like to ultimately open four or five in the Springs,” he said. “I like the Springs. I think it’s a really strong viable market for us.”

The shop, which offers more than 1.5 million sandwich combinations, started in Dallas, Texas, in 2004. Gordon opened his first Colorado store in 2007 and has grown his business since then.

When he went to Texas to check the franchise out, he had just climbed his first 14er, a 14,000-foot-plus mountain in Colorado. He decided to incorporate an element of the outdoors in his Colorado stores and offers a free sandwich to anyone who has their photo taken in front of a sign at the top of one of Colorado’s 14ers with a Which Wich bag.

The store at University Village has its official opening on Wednesday, but quietly opened for business today and already had eight people lined up for sandwiches at 10 a.m., Gordon said.

They have hired 16 employees, mostly full-time, who trained at Denver stores. And they will begin hiring more part-time employees soon. Gordon expects to have 20 to 22 total.

One Response to Which Wich opens at University Village

  1. Nice to see a closer sandwich shop opening that competes with Jimmy Johns and Subway. Ever since Friendly’s Sub Shop closed, there hasn’t been much of an alternative, until now. Great location, as well. Hope this encourages more tenants to join University Village.
