Olive oil shop to open Memorial Day

The franchise owners of a new Venice Olive Oil store expect to open their shop at 109 N. Tejon St. on Memorial Day.

Matt Carpenter and Molly Martyn moved from South Denver to live and work in downtown Colorado Springs. They bought into the Venice Olive Oil franchise and are opening the brand’s first store outside of its home state of Florida.

Martyn’s step father, Mike Lamberto, opened two olive stores in Florida in his retirement and was looking to expand to new territory.

“He is ex-military,” Carpenter said. “And he’s always really liked the Colorado Springs area.”

When he asked Carpenter, who was working as an engineer, and Martyn, who is a psychotherapist, if they wanted to open a shop for him, they jumped on the opportunity, Carpenter said.

Carpenter grew up in small town in the Midwest and Martyn grew up in South Dakota. Both liked the idea of moving out of busy Denver to a slightly slower pace in Colorado Springs.

“Everyone we talked to, it was unanimous,” Carpenter said. “They all told us we had to be downtown on Tejon Street.”

He said they looked at several Tejon locations before deciding to settle down across the street from Savory Spice at 110 N. Tejon St. and just down the road from Sparrow Hawk Cookware at 120 N. Tejon St.

The shop will sell more than 25 varieties of 100-percent pure olive oil and savory balsamic vinegars along with olive, olive products – including cosmetics, and gourmet food items.

Carpenter said the shop would always offer free tastings.
