Big R to build big box store in Monument

Big R, a ranching and outdoor gear store, is expected to break ground on a 34,000-square-foot retail box store in south Monument in the next couple weeks.

Mark Useman, senior managing director at Sierra Commercial Real Estate, sold a 10-acre plot at the northeast corner of Struthers Road and Spanish Bit Drive to the retailer.

Big R will take up about 5.5 acres of the space.

“This is pretty significant,” Useman said. “There just aren’t a lot of these 35,000-square-foot places going up.”

The store is a good fit for the area, he said. It will carry everything from sporting goods to guns.

When Foxworth Galbraith had a location in the area, it carried equestrian gear and ranch supplies. But there has been nothing like it since the store left, Useman said.

“There’s a lot of horse property and large acreage in that area,” Useman said.

He said the store should be completed and ready to open by November.

He said he will market the remaining 4.5 acres to smaller users that will complement Big R.
