Governor creates new early childhood office

Gov. John Hickenlooper has consolidated a number of programs under a new office, the Office of Early Childhood Development.

The office will be under  the umbrellas of the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services.

It will bring together programs from four divisions within CDHS, including child care licensing, quality initiative, Colorado child care assistance, early childhood councils, early intervention and childhood mental health.

The move will able the division to use all its available resources without incurring additional expenses. The unified approach will reduce red tape, streamline offerings, aid local programs and ensure high standards, said a press release announcing the new office.

Under the direction of the lieutenant governor’s office, the Head Start State Collaboration Office and Early Childhood Leadership Commission will all relocate to DHS.
