Repairs to the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge over Tejon Street will start at 6 a.m. tomorrow, according to the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority
The bridge has cracks in the girders. South Tejon Street from Mill Street to Fountain Boulevard will be closed in both directions. Businesses in the area are open, and can be accessed from north or south of the bridge. Bridge repairs are expected to be completed Wednesday as well.
The Union Pacific Railroad Bridge over Tejon Street is one of the oldest bridges in the City of Colorado Springs. Built in 1902, it is now more than 110 years old.
The city placed the bridge on the replacement list two years ago. However, the initial phase will be a research study to find a solution to the problem, due both to the complicated nature of the improvements and the need to partner with Union Pacific.
Funding to replace the bridge – which also has lower clearance than modern bridges – will be covered under PPPTA 2, if voters decide to continue the transportation tax in November.
