Thousands of young illegal immigrants filed paperwork yesterday for the government’s new deferment program, which will allow them to stay in the country legally for two years, said the Denver Post.
It was the first day they could file paperwork and avoid deportation. In Chicago, more than 13,000 people signed up. In Elizabethtown, N.J., the auditorium was filled to capacity.
About 950,000 illegal immigrants could be eligible for the program.
