Japan considers closing nuclear power plants

If the 55 nuclear power plants in Japan are closed, it will cost power companies more than $55 billion – and leave four of them insolvent, reports the New York Times.

The costs are one factor to consider as Japan’s government tries to balance safety with the reality of nuclear power in Japan.

The government is considering cutting it reliance on nuclear power gradually.
