Minding Your Business

Learn how to research starting or growing a business. This class, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Penrose Library, covers print sources, electronic databases and websites to help find information on industry, competition, vendors, financials and more.

Ready Rating luncheon

The American Red Cross hosts a Ready Rating program, at noon at 1040 S. 8th St. to help businesses and organizations be better prepared for emergencies and ensure employees and clients are safe during an emergency; minimize losses; and maintain brand and reputation. Encore Entrepreneur day

The U.S. Small Business Administration and AARP will host National Encore Entrepreneur Day for baby boomers interested in opening a small business from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, 1445 Market St., 5th floor. The event will help connect encore entrepreneurs with mentors from SBA’s network of Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers, and SCORE chapters who can help throughout the life of an entrepreneur’s business.

Recycling event

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado and KKTV 11 News are teaming up with Mobile Record Shredders, Blue Star Recyclers and Bestway Disposal to host a free document shredding and electronics recycling day. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at Sky Sox Stadium, 4385 Tutt Blvd. The public is invited to bring as many as five boxes of documents. Plastics, cardboard, magazines and files more than one-half inches thick cannot be accepted. Those who wish to bring more than five boxes will be charged $5 per each additional box and proceeds will benefit the BBB Foundation’s scholarship program. Also offered is shredding for any data storing electronic device. For a $5 fee, Blue Star Recyclers will shred your hard drive.

The El Pomar Institute for Innovation and Commercialization hosts its October EPIIC Night at 5:30 p.m. at UCCS Berger Hall. Charles Sizemore, chief investment officer of Sizemore Capital Management, will discuss the aging of baby boomers and what it means for the American economy; the importance of investing for income; and using SEC filings to follow the trading moves of star investors. Tax class

The Colorado Department of Revenue offers a free tax class from 1 to 4 p.m. on the laws surrounding state sales and use taxes. This class is for new and current businesses, taxpayers considering opening a business, tax preparers consulting with clients on this topic, and/or those who need a refresher course on sales/use tax law. Sports Hall of Fame banquet

The Sports Hall of Fame annual banquet and induction ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Colorado Springs World Arena. The event includes a reception and sports silent auction.
