The Colorado Springs City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow free parking at downtown and Old Colorado City meters on Saturdays in December.

Council member Lisa Czeladtko said this will be the eighth year the city has allowed free meter parking to promote holiday shopping downtown and on the Westside.

“There has been a lot of discussion about the reinvention of our downtown,” Czeladtko said. “And this is something merchants have said they want.”

She said the city parking enterprise has estimated the cost of the free parking will be $27,000. But it’s important to attracting holiday shoppers downtown, she said.
