Annie, I am on the steering committee of Urban Intervention, co-chairing the taskforce committee, working with a management for the City Auditorium, and have lived here for just over 2 years. The clearest explanation I have is that
1. We have a strong mayor vocalizing his interests, which provides a "champion" for activity
2. We are getting stakeholder opinions throughout the community
3. There have been so many studies done; ULI, Dream City 2020, Operation 6035, PPACG Regional Sustainability Plan, that all recommend similar things. Opposition would be silly now and "dreamers" have been validated.
4. The Young Professionals in our community are taking these projects on because they see opportunities that HAVE not been realized. The work we do is as volunteers and we are not getting paid, heck I know two of us that don't even have a steady source of income. We could leave, but we have committeed to taking our stand here in Colorado Springs.
5. Necessity. 85% of the global population is expected to be living in urban areas by 2050. We have organized in order to provide a sustainable foundation for the preparation of a denser urban area. Our purpose is not to ego-driven and not focused on our own wealth in dollars, as many of the sprawl development was in the past (so I hear).
6. With a residential turnover rate of 3.5 years on average, it has been hard to organize and offer consistency, the folks working on many of these projects are dedicated to this region because they see new life brought in by new citizens and have not lost hope.

Annie, I encourage you to get involved once again. We could use your enthusiasm, your expertise, and your vision as we continue to develop the Downtown Colorado Springs Renaissance.

Jeff Smith and the team at Classic had that exact vision a long time ago... a baseball park downtown, loft living above quaint shops at "America the Beautiful Park" with a bridge connecting it all to downtown.... it would have been lovely and revitalized the area many, many years ago. They and their partners put a lot of time, money, thought and effort into the plan, including seven years of a highly attended free weekly summer concert series and a farm and art market at ABT, to show the vitality of that area. Where was the support then?
