ACLU subpoenas mayor, councilor and police chief

The Mayor’s Counsel meeting and press conference originally scheduled for Thursday Dec. 13 have both been canceled, due to the ongoing lawsuit against the city’s no-solicitation ordinance.

The American Civil Liberties Union has subpoenaed Mayor Steve Bach, Councilor Merv Bennett and Police Chief Pete Carey to testify in the federal trial in Denver Thursday morning. Dave Munger, president of the Council on Neighborhoods and Organizations, was also called to testify.

The ACLU filed suit against the city earlier this month, when the City Council passed an ordinance aimed at banning panhandling downtown. While City Attorney Chris Melcher contends the ordinance is narrowly tailored to stand up to a court challenge, the ACLU believes it violates free-speech protections.
