SBDC program growing, sending local plan to state competition

Nathan Liljestrand, owner of Custom Creations, is competing in the state’s SBDCs Leading Edge business plan program.

When Nathan and Melissa Liljestrand’s remodeling business, Custom Creations, needed a bottom-line makeover, they took it to the Small Business Development Center’s Leading Edge class.

The couple’s business plan has advanced to a state-level competition, where it will compete against the business plans submitted by 14 other SBDCs for a cash prize.

The SBDCs 13-week Leading Edge program  has the ultimate goal of helping small business owners write a business plan. The class is for budding entrepreneurs and seasoned business owners.

Leading Edge is an intensive training course that provides business owners and entrepreneurs with guidance in cash-flow management, marketing, finance, personnel and legal issues.

SBDC in Colorado Springs has offered the Leading Edge class since 1987.

This year, the program was so popular that SBDC will offer two sessions in 2013, said Aikta Marcoulier, SBCD director. The next session begins Feb. 5. The fee to register is $395.
