Deputy fire chief to serve as interim chief

Smith,_Tommy_DCDeputy Chief Tommy Smith will serve as interim fire chief for the city of Colorado Springs, according to a press release from Mayor Steve Bach’s office.

Smith has been with the fire department since 1991 and served as a firefighter, paramedic, lieutenant, captain and battalion chief. He currently oversees support services, including the training division, medical division, division of the fire marshal, fleet and facilities, human resources, public communications and community education. Smith has a bachelor’s degree in organizational management.

Fire Chief Richard Brown’s last day is Tuesday. He announced his retirement last week, but will remain with the department as a consultant, receiving full pay and benefits.

The city is conducting a national search for the next fire chief.

  1. Doesn’t retirement MEAN retirement? Why pay(our tax dollars) FULL bennies/compensation to a retiree? Social Security/retirement should be sufficient which I am sure he is also receiving.
