The Small Business Development Center and the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado presented several awards at Friday’s luncheon that capped off Small Business Week.
The Small Business Development Center’s volunteer of the year award went to Terry Zarsky, business services librarian at the Pikes Peak Library District.
The special recognition – community involvement award went to Ingrid Wood, who helped rally the business community with the Waldo Canyon Fire as well as the Black Forest Fire. Wood was credited with creating the SBDC’s disaster response team, which marshals state and federal resources for small businesses harmed in disasters. She said the disaster team was working with dozens of businesses harmed in the Black Forest fire.
Family owned small business of the year was presented to the American Battery Corporation, which has been in Colorado Springs 30 years. One of the requirements for the award was that it had to be family owned for two generations and that the family must be actively involved in the daily operations.
The small business champion of the year award was presented to Blakeley & Company, an advertising and public relations firm that is the second largest in the city.
The small business person of the year award was given to Jan Erickson with Janska LLC. The company manufactures specialty clothing in the Springs.
