Construction for Southern Delivery System began Tuesday on the Juniper Pump Station at Lake Pueblo State Park and the last remaining section of pipeline in Pueblo County. Area businesses that will perform work or provide materials to build SDS components in the county participated in a brick-laying ceremony, from 2 – 3 p.m.
Some of the largest components of the SDS project include the three pump stations needed to transport water. Construction of the pump stations will cost approximately $76.5 million with about one-third of that benefitting Colorado companies, according to a Colorado Springs Utilities news release.
SDS is a regional project that will deliver water to Colorado Springs, Pueblo West, Security and Fountain. So far, more than 300 businesses and organizations in Colorado have helped plan and construct SDS, including about 100 in Pueblo County. Nearly $300 million–of the $362 million spent to plan and build SDS–has gone to Colorado companies.
