Youth Corps contributes to fire mitigation

The Mile High Youth Corps – Colorado Springs responded to the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires as well as the subsequent flooding.

The Corps during the summer and fall conducted 23 weeks of restoration and flood mitigation efforts in the burn areas, according to a news release.

For the past four years, the Corps has operated two chainsaw crews per year. Next year, the organization plans to deploy six.

In November, the Corps reached a milestone by implementing a winter fire mitigation crew. This project is projected to provide wildfire protection for 1,337 homes and 674 acres within the Pikes Peak urban-wildfire interface.
