League of Women Voters of the Pikes Peak Region honored community advocate Jan Doran with its eighth annual Making Democracy Work Award Tuesday.
The League recognized Doran for her work in the community and creating positive change in Colorado Springs and El Paso County, according to a League press release.
Doran’s involvement in government decision-making began in 1994 and has continued over 20 years. She brings energy and a diplomatic style to her volunteerism. County Commissioner Sallie Clark called Doran, “One of the most respected citizens I know.”
Doran places emphasis on transparent, open government and public involvement in the government’s decision-making process, the League said. Serving on many city and county boards, commissions and advisory councils, she has tackled issues from human services to citizen outreach, and stormwater to transportation. She served as president of the Council of Neighbors and Organizations from 1999 to 2006.
Other nominees include Carmen Abeyta, Queen Brown, Anna Marie Ortiz and Sue Stohlman.
