The 11 a.m. event initiated the first phase of construction on Village at Alpine Valley, according to a UCCS news release.
Plans for the Village — located at the southwest end of the housing complex — include one, two, three and four bedroom “sweet-style” units to house 515 additional students, according to the release. The building will also include a new dining area and academic spaces.
The first phase of construction, which will make room for 292 students, is expected to be complete in August 2015. The second phase will ready space for 223 more students and is expected to be complete in August 2016.
University of Colorado Board Regent Kyle Hybl and Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak led the “shovel brigade,” according to the release.
