Lon also spent several years as a sea captain and holds a 100-ton Coast Guard License. Living and working in the Caribbean, Florida, Great Lakes and the Bahamas had some benefits but one can tend to get a bit of sea water between the ears living that lifestyle so he swallowed the anchor and came back to land. Lon is also an avid rugby fan having played, coached and refereed the sport for many years. He still plays in old-boy games when his bones don’t hurt too much.

Rob Larimer photo
Rob Larimer
Writing has always come easy to me – except when it comes to writing about myself. So, when I was asked to punch out this little profile of myself, I procrastinated – for about six weeks. Then, one day, our usually jovial publisher, Lon, phoned me up at my desk. He began the conversation like this: “Rob, this is the publisher.” (Certainly I knew who it was, but his restatement of his managerial authority was not without purpose.) “Where’s your profile for the Web site?” he asked.

And believe it or not, shortly after the phone call, I began writing this:

Hi. I’m Rob Larimer. I’m managing editor here at the Colorado Springs Business Journal. My professional past includes a list of varying stints of employment at the Colorado Springs Gazette, The Denver Rocky Mountain News and The Capitol Reporter, where I covered the Colorado General Assembly for two sessions. Contact me if you have a big story for the CSBJ.

Becky Hurley photo
Becky Hurley
Becky Hurley first joined the Colorado Springs Business Journal as a contributing writer in 2001, specializing in commercial real estate and business feature stories.

She left for a year from 2003 to 2004 to work for a local nonprofit and returned as a full-time staff writer focusing on real estate and employment articles.

“What I find fascinating about writing for the Colorado Springs Business Journal,” she says, “is the energy, creativity and broad range of opportunities generated by our local business community. I like providing a balanced look at all sides of issues that affect the business-to-business sector – and enjoy talking to the people who help create a dynamic, forward-thinking community.”

Prior to joining the newspaper, Hurley worked 10 years for the Gates Land Co., developers of Cheyenne Mountain Ranch on the city’s south side. Her background also includes five years as a marketing director with the local cable television company, as a real estate marketing consultant and as the public relations director for a local communications agency.

He then worked at a variety of jobs; charter boat captain, delivery skipper, investment banker, owner/operator of a fleet of charter sailboats -- until 1981, when he came back to the Springs.

Since then, he’s been a Realtor, renovated Victorians, bought/sold historic art, served a couple of terms on city council, sold advertising and been a freelance journalist.

I’ve lived in beautiful Colorado Springs for the past 15 years. I have been in the newspaper industry since the early 1990’s and I love it! Heidi Witherington photo
Heidi Witherington
I’m a native of Colorado (Ft. Collins if you must know.) I moved back to the Springs in 2000 after a stint in New England. I started to work for the CSBJ in 2002 as the receptionist/researcher for the Book of Lists. In 2004 I was promoted to Director of Circulation/Office Manager. In September 2007 I moved into sales and am the Classified Sales Manager.

I have to say this is the best team of people I’ve ever worked with! In the future, I’d like to become the first female President (if Hilary doesn’t do it first) of the US or the Queen of my own island should I win the lottery.

We have a professional department to handle the steady flow of classified advertising for the combination buy of the Business Journal and the four military base paper’s classified section, Colorado Power Classifieds.

Heather Alvarado photo
Heather Alvarado
Heather joined Colorado Publishing Company in March 2005 as a Classified Account Executive. She moved to Colorado from her home town Lake Orion, Michigan in 2002 by herself to see what Colorado had to offer her. She lived in Colorado as a child and remembered all the great memories of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Her memory served her well and she decided to stay in Colorado Springs not only for the beautiful scenery but also for the quality of life.

Now she, her husband and their 4 year old daughter are delighted to call Colorado home. Heather is currently going to school for a Bachelor of Science in Business/Marketing degree and is anticipating her graduation in the fall of 2009. She enjoys working in the Classified Department with the other great staff.

Kathy Bernheim photo
Kathy Bernheim
Kathy Berheim manages the Daily Transcript, which has been in publication since 1907 but she hasn’t worked on it nearly that long. She enjoys meticulous customer service and long hours working well into the evening. When she’s not serving attorneys and public notice advertisers, she can be found making sandwiches to feed the Colorado Publishing Army.

When you call to place an ad, you’ll know it’s her when you hear that warm soft voice. She's trying to get the publisher to let her offer discounts on public notices if you bring a bag of cat food, but it may be a while before that happens.

Phyllis Decker
If a woman is from Texas, she will let you know. Otherwise, there's no reason to embarass her by asking. Phyllis has been adding to Colorado Publishing Company's excellent customer service for 4 years. She's short and sweet and she's from, of course, Texas. Watch for her kids to be famous: her daughter will be the next Dr. Phil and her son is aiming for the major leagues.
Sue Dougherty photo
Sue Dougherty
Sue is a native Coloradoan. She was born in Denver and raised in Colorado Springs. Her family owned a wholesale floral business. She spent many summers planting carnations, roses and mums in the greenhouses. Sue has three brothers and one sister. She has two children, Michelle and Don, and one grand daughter, whom she loves to spoil.

She attended Adam State College in Alamosa and the newly named Colorado Southern University in Pueblo. Her primary studies were in education, communications and performing arts.

Sue has spent the last 30 years in the business industry. Her positions ranged from administrative assistant to director of sales and public relations. She enjoys attending special events where she can extend her strongest attributes in networking with business representatives and being a meeting planner. When she isn’t working, Sue loves to perform. She is a talented character actress, writer, teacher of the arts and acting coach. One of her current challenges is writing her first screenplay.

She truly enjoys working with the staff, and meeting the challenges of her position with the Colorado Springs Business Journal.
